Every year, the Governments of an increasing number of countries introduce biometrics to address critical citizen needs. These include areas such as Electronic Passports, Automated Border Crossing, registration of births and deaths, migrations and refugee movements, welfare systems as well as manage ID documents such as driving licenses and national ID cards.
Biometrics being used for such purposes is moving beyond the traditional fingerprint systems, and today involves facial, iris and vein recognition systems. Such biometrics can be used with varying degrees of complexity for identification and verification, while large biometric systems continue to bank on fingerprint based Automatic Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS).
Who are the players in the arena? What do they offer today? Given the heightened security threats (police requirements) and the more focused welfare requirements (in areas such as pensions) what are the emerging requirements of national governments? Who are the players and what is the latest that they can offer?
How do such requirements conflict with privacy issues? What are the social and human aspects that are associated with such technologies and their deployment?
This conference addresses a wide spectrum of such subjects, from the institutional, user and the technology point of view, and will also focus on how such solutions are placed within the overall context of ICT.
